Preventive Dentistry Portland, OR
Nearly all Americans will experience some form of tooth decay in their lifetimes. Untreated tooth decay progressively erodes the infected tooth and causes more serious problems. Since bacteria cause tooth decay, foregoing treatment risks spread to neighboring teeth, multiplying dental health issues. It is very important to remove the decay, clean the area, and restore the tooth with a filling.
At Sundberg Center for Dentistry, Viseh Sundberg, DDS, takes exceptional care of your oral health. Below are some of the preventive services that our practice provides.
X-rays should be taken between every 6 months to 3 years depending on your past history of restorations and how regularly you visit the dentist for exams.
Dental Cleanings & Exams
Cleanings are recommended every 6 months for a healthy mouth, and every 3–4 months for those with periodontal disease.
Sealants are generally used to help prevent tooth decay on the biting surfaces of back teeth (molars). The natural grooves of these teeth can trap food that can resist casual brushing and rinsing.
One of the best ways to keep your gums from bleeding when you come in for a cleaning is to floss regularly. Brushing your teeth before or after flossing is less important than whether you floss or not.
Oral Cancer Screening
Periodic oral cancer screenings are essential for detecting a problem while it is still treatable. Viseh Sundberg, DDS, will perform an exam of your mouth during a routine dental visit in order to screen for oral cancer.
Brushing & Flossing
Sometimes it is not how long you brush your teeth, but the technique that you use. You could brush your teeth for more than the recommended two minutes, but if you are not hitting the right angles, the bacteria will still reside in your mouth.
Removing third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, is an often necessary dental procedure as a preventive measure. Taking steps to have your wisdom teeth removed in early adulthood can ease a larger potential problem in later adulthood.
